Explore, Experiment, Evaluate

Explored-

I started by doing some research reading and viewing:

  • 'Unlocking Formative Assessment' by Shirley Clarke, with chapter 4 as a starting point

  • "Embedded formative assessment' by Dylan Wiliam, particularly chapter 3

  • 'Visible Learning Evidence into Action Workbook One" (ESF/Cognition publication)

  • Youtube Carol Dweck http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTXrV0_3UjY for Growth Mindset

I then had my students take a survey regarding the feedback received in my class and their perception of themselves as learners as well as having the students review their books and I then interviewed them regarding their ideas of good feedback and how I could improve (see: Evidence for videos and survey data).

Experimented-

  • I followed the suggested guidelines for written feedback according to Shirley Clarke to mark a piece of writing

  • I used conferencing vs written feedback

  • I intoduced more specific rubrics and checklists which included self, peer and teacher feedback

  • I introduced 'Growth Mindset' and the vocabulary of 'yet' to the students to give them ownership of their learning

Evaluated-

  • It took 4 hours to mark the writing- NOT MANAGEABLE

  • The students loved the conferencing, I made sure my EA knew what the specifics of the lesson were to share the load of conferencing

  • The combination of the modified rubrics/checklists combined with the new vocabulary towards effort has been amazing. My children are constantly heard saying, "I can't do it...yet".
